Definition of «congressional district»

A congressional district is a geographical area represented by one member in the United States House of Representatives. Each state is divided into multiple districts, with each district electing one representative to Congress. The number of representatives per state depends on its population and is reapportioned every 10 years according to the results of the census. Congressional districts are usually designed to have equal populations, as required by law, in order to ensure that all citizens have an equal say in their government.
